Antibacterial Effect of Metals

Have you ever heard of metals killing bacteria or even thought such to be a possibility? If you have never heard, then let it be known to you today that bacteria can actually be killed using metals. Though, not all bacteria are harmful to humans, animals and plant lives, but some bacteria are actually harmful and can cause problems with various levels of fatality. While humans make efforts to keep the “good guy” bacteria alive and even help in propagating them, they are always on the lookout for ways to get rid of the bad ones to help eradicate the bacteria’s growth and curtail the problems they cause to life.

Which are the metals that had been discovered to negatively impact bacteria growth and propagation? Some of such metals are copper, brass and silver. Mostly used metals belong to the group of metals referred to as alloys. These metals have been discovered to kill bacteria, like Salmonella and Escherichia coli, both of which belong to the group of bacteria called gram-negative; almost all gram-negative bacteria cause one form of illness or the other. Salmonella bacteria is known for typhoid fever and a number of gastrointestinal problems. Escherichia coli too is implicated in gastrointestinal problems.

Studies showed that copper has faster and better antibacterial effect than the other two metals; while copper was able to kill the bacteria within 4 hours, silver took 8 hours to kill the same dose of bacteria and brass on its part took up to 12 hours to kill the same quantity of bacteria. Other metals aside the ones mentioned above were equally tested on bacteria, but they had rather insignificant impacts on the bacteria. It was equally discovers that the antibacterial capability of the metals depend a lot on their concentrations; the metals kill more at higher concentration.
