Tesla is a well-known name in the world of technology. The company is known for building some of the best automobiles in the world. Tesla has now ventured into power generation; the company has established a solar farm in Hawaii for the purpose of powering the city at night. The farm can generate up to 13MW of electricity, and it is located on the Kauai Island in Hawaii.
The Hawaiian government has plans to generate its electricity from renewable sources alone. They plan to achieve this 100% dependence on a renewable source by 2045. This is ambitious, but the authorities think it is achievable, and they have already made moves to ensure that it becomes a reality.
The solar farm built by Tesla is installed with up to 300 Tesla Powerpack batteries. These batteries can generate up to 52MWh in total, and they make it possible for the farm to sell its stored power during the evenings.
The establishment of this farm will reduce the amount of fossil fuel consumed by the state by up to 1.6 million gallons each year. The number is set to increase further as the dependence on clean energy gets to the next level. Power plants require so much fuel to generate electricity, but the deviation from this conventional means of electricity generation will reduce oil consumption. The program will equally reduce the amount spent by Hawaiians on electricity.
Tesla acquired the SolarCity last year for a total sum of $2.6 billion, but the Hawaiian project is the very first major solar-plus-storage project the company will establish since then. Tesla is not limiting its activities to Hawaii alone; rather, the company plans to extend to other countries to help them generate renewable and sustainable electricity.
Tesla CEO, Elon Musk, said: “we will work with energy providers around the world seeking to overcome barriers in the way of building a sustainable, renewable energy grid of their own.” Tesla authorities think the renewable energy business will yield far more than what they have been generating from the car business and they see a tremendous growth in years to come.
